Using an Expired Domain for a New Site: A Decision Framework

An expired domain is a good foundation only if you would still be comfortable owning and building on it after discounting any assumed ranking benefit.

Brand test

Would you choose this name if it had no SEO metrics? A hard-to-pronounce or legally risky name can undermine the project long after any inherited signal disappears.

History test

Can you explain the domain’s past without embarrassment? Clean topic continuity and a legitimate archive make a stronger foundation than repeated unrelated rebuilds.

Are the important links live, editorial and topically relevant? If the best referring pages no longer exist, adjust the price accordingly.

Content test

Can you build a useful site that makes sense to the old audience and to new visitors? If the only thesis is “rank faster because the domain is old,” the project is too dependent on uncertain search behavior.
