Referring Domains for Expired Domains: Quality Beats the Backlink Count

A backlink total can be inflated by one sitewide template. Referring domains are usually a better first-pass measure of link diversity, but the number still needs to be opened and inspected.

Count unique sources first

Separate unique linking domains from total backlinks. Ten thousand links from one footer are not the same as editorial references from many independent sites.

Prioritize the strongest sources

Open links from reputable, topically relevant sites before spending time on the long tail. Confirm the referring page still exists and the link is still present.

A citation inside an article, a resource-list link and a boilerplate footer link carry different context. Record why the old page was linked so you can judge whether a successor resource could legitimately serve the same purpose.

Strong links often point to deep pages, files or resources rather than the homepage. Save those targets during due diligence. They can guide restoration decisions if you acquire the domain for a related project.

Discount stale or irrelevant sources

Old indexes can retain dead referring pages. Also discount sources that are unrelated to the domain’s historical topic or appear to be part of a manipulative network.
