Domain Backorder vs Drop Catch: What’s the Difference?

A backorder is the request you place; drop catching is the infrastructure race used to acquire a domain when the registry releases it.

Backorder

You place a backorder with a service before release. The service then attempts to acquire the domain on your behalf if it reaches the drop. If multiple customers or services want the same name, the result may involve an auction or competition across providers.

Drop catching

Drop catching describes the automated registration race at the release moment. Individual buyers rarely compete effectively by clicking a registrar search box at the right second for highly contested names.

Research before ordering

A backorder fee can feel small compared with a premium auction, but the same due diligence applies. Know the historical topic, backlink quality, brand/legal risk and your maximum bid before the name becomes competitive.
